Growing Zones
Growing to around 12 feet tall, the compact Ann Magnolia is perfect for a smaller garden. Magnolia liliflora 'Ann' as it is also known, produces gently scented purple-red flowers around 4 inches across in late spring. As a hybrid cross between ‘Nigra’ and ‘Rosea’, the Ann Magnolia flowers earlier in its life compared to others.
Being deciduous, the Ann Magnolia’s leaves fall in the winter, but only after they have turned a lovely yellow hue. It makes an ideal small specimen tree that will provide interest in both the spring and fall. Ann Magnolia is perfect for city gardens or adding to the back of a mixed border. Exceptionally cold hardy, this magnolia grows in zones 4 to 8.
Ann Magnolia Care
The Ann Magnolia is happiest when grown in either full or partial sun. It prefers a fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic and kept moist. It will tolerate most soil types apart from those that are poorly drained or saturated. A slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants can be applied in the spring from the second growing season to give it a boost. Water frequently to keep the soil moist during the spring and summer. Mulching annually around the base of the tree will help prevent weeds and moisture loss.
Pruning is generally not required. However, any damaged or dead branches can be cut back to a lower branch in early fall.
Ann Magnolia Spacing
Over time, the Ann Magnolia can grow to around 10 to 12 feet tall and wide. Give it room to reach its full potential and space each plant 12 to 15 feet apart.
