Growing Zones
The Anthony Waterer Spirea is a radiant, easy-care perennial. Also known as Spiraea bumalda, this plant has narrow leaves that emerge with a slight pink hue in the spring before settling into a blue-green color. Flat-top flower clusters are a rose-red color and bloom in late June. The flower clusters almost appear to hover over the foliage.
This upright, mounded plant has a very dense growth habit. Use in a mixed bed or border or conceal a foundation. The blue-green foliage looks lovely when planted alongside an evergreen. This is a fast-growing plant, but it responds well to pruning, so you can ensure it will continue to fit a space by trimming back new growth. This beauty grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Anthony Waterer Spirea Care
Plant this Spirea is full to partial sun. Soil should be rich and neutral to slightly acidic and well-drained. Routinely water for the first growing season, but established plants generally only need water during a dry period.
An application of a balanced fertilizer in the spring will get this plant off to a strong start. Trim as needed in the late winter or early spring.
Anthony Waterer Spirea Spacing
The Anthony Waterer Spirea is an upright shrub that will grow 3 to 4 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. Plants can be spaced 14 to 28 inches apart.
