Growing Zones
Most gardens can use a boost in the middle of the summer. Around July Most perennials are slowing down from the heat, but not the Aphrodite Rose of Sharon. This semi woody shrub is fully hardy, but has gorgeous tropical looking flowers that can be up to 5inches in diameter! The Aphrodite Rose of Sharon keeps blooming during the hottest days of summer due to its sterile blooms.
Regular deadheading is not required, although it will help to keep Aphrodite tidy. Rose of Sharon can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or is easily trained into a standard tree form. Container growing or garden bed growing suit Rose of Sharon equally. This shrub can also be used effectively as an informal, flowering hedge along a fenceline, patio edge or along a driveway.
Aphrodite Rose of Sharon Care
The perfect site for the Aphrodite Rose of Sharon is one that has well drained soil, average texture soil, neutral pH and full sun to part shade. What an easy plant! Watering is very important until Rose of Sharon fully establishes itself. As this shrub matures it will become more drought tolerant. Mulching with leaves or organic compost will help to bulk up the soil and retain moisture over time.
Pruning is very easy with Rose of Sharon. This shrub is deciduous and is best pruned at the end of winter when the overall shape can be seen without foliage. Cutting out dead, dying, diseased or diagonal branches will help to keep a neat shape and make way for vigorous new spring growth. Fertilizing is also done early in the spring. Use a well balanced, slow release feed that is formulated for blooming shrubs and roses.
Aphrodite Rose of Sharon Spacing
The mature size of the Aphrodite Rose of Sharon is quite large for a shrub. A height of 8-12 feet and a width of 6-10 feet. If you plan to grow this shrub to its full size as a hedge, space plants at 8 feet on center. The overall height can be kept much smaller by reducing the length of branches as the season progresses. Rose of Sharon produces blooms on the current season's wood growth, so blooming will not be interrupted.
