The unusual tubular flowers of the Apple Slices Spigelia are bound to attract some interest when they bloom in late spring. Loved by hummingbirds and pollinators, the red flowers last for weeks and contrast effectively against its mid-green foliage. Botanically called Spigelia marilandica 'Apple Slices', this perennial is easy to grow and will come back year after year.
Growing to around 18 to 22 inches tall, Apple Slices Spigelia forms a pleasing mounded shape. It is a North American native and is suitable for growing in USDA zones 5 to 9. Able to tolerate both sun and shade, Apple Slices Spigelia is ideal for woodland planting, growing best at the front of a border or even in a container.
Apple Slices Spigelia Care
For the best flowers, you will want to grow this perennial in full sun. However, it is also happy in partial shade. Apple Slices Spigelia prefers a fertile and moist, but free-draining soil. You can increase the fertility of the soil and give it a boost by mulching with compost in the spring. Apple Slices grows best in moist soils, so regular irrigation is required.
Apple Slices Spigelia is a low-maintenance perennial and needs little ongoing care once established. In late winter, simply cut back the spent foliage and stems to make way for new growth.
Apple Slices Spigelia Spacing
When established, Apple Slices Spigelia can reach 18 to 22 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. When grown as a group, you can space this plant around 16 to 18 inches apart.
