Aquavita™ Juniper (Juniperus virginiana) is used for its aqua blue foliage. When you need year-round interest in the garden, this tall and narrow shrub is just the one to plant. Because it stays narrow, Aquavita™ Juniper makes a great shrub to stick in that empty corner where nothing else fits. Even better, it is very low maintenance.
This juniper is grown for its evergreen foliage. It has berries that stay on the shrub in the fall and winter. Birds love the berries and need them for scarce winter food. This juniper is also deer resistant. After it is established, the shrub will tolerate hot, dry conditions. It can be used as a screen or hedge, edging plant, specimen plant, or a landscape feature. Aquavita™ Juniper is native to the Rocky Mountains from Alberta to Texas and in similar mountain ranges from British Columbia to Arizona.
Aquavita Juniper Care
Aquavita™ Juniper must be planted in well-drained soil or it will not do well. It will grow in poor soils and can survive hot, dry conditions, but must be watered regularly. Aquavita™ Juniper grows in full sun and is hardy in zones 4a-9b. It should be fertilized in the spring with a slow-release fertilizer for shrubs and trees.
Aquavita™ Juniper can be trimmed if necessary. Stick to the tips of branches. Don’t cut the thick branches, which take a long time to recover.
Aquavita Juniper Spacing
This shrub grows 10-15 feet tall but because of its compact growth habit only gets 3-4 wide. It only needs to be spaced 3-4 feet, so can be put at the back of the flower bed without taking up all the space.
