Arctic Blaze® Red Sage (Salvia hybrida ‘Novasalred’) adds a dramatic splash of red from spring through fall, delighting the eye with upright spikes that tower above bright green foliage. Each bloom bursts with color along sturdy stems, creating a memorable focal point in beds or borders. At about 24 inches tall and up to 36 inches wide, this plant’s bushy habit fits easily in smaller spaces without losing its showy appeal. We think its lengthy flowering period and striking hue make it a prime candidate for pollinator-friendly landscapes.

This hardy selection tolerates heat, resists deer browsing, and helps lure hummingbirds with its tubular petals. Recognized by the University of Georgia Trial Gardens for excellence, it offers both ornamental value and reliable garden performance. Plant it in mass groupings for a sea of color or combine it with other sun-loving perennials to create a lively border. Arctic Blaze® Red Sage adapts well to containers too, adding a bold accent to patios and decks.

Arctic Blaze® Red Sage Care

Choose a site with full sun exposure (at least six hours daily) and well-draining soil. Moderate watering in the first season supports root development, after which this sage becomes more drought-tolerant. A slow-release, all-purpose fertilizer in spring encourages consistent blooms, though overfeeding may result in leggy growth. Remove spent flower stalks periodically to refresh the plant and promote further bud production.

Prune spent foliage in late autumn or early spring to clean up the plant and allow new shoots to emerge. When growing in pots, use a high-quality, well-draining medium and water just enough to keep the soil moderately moist. For colder climates (zone 6), consider adding mulch around the root zone in late fall to insulate the crown. Bring container-grown plants to a sheltered spot if prolonged freezes threaten.

Arctic Blaze® Red Sage Spacing

Set individual plants around 24 inches apart for seamless coverage in borders or when creating a striking mass planting. If growing in a pot, select a container at least 12 inches wide to allow for strong root growth and adequate air circulation.
