Feature

Arugula is a fast-growing green with a spicy, peppery taste that adds a distinctive flavor to salads or a sandwich. The narrow leaves have a central midrib and wavy edges. The leaves can be harvested at any time between July and October. This plant continually pushes out new growth for the entire growing season.

Arugula Plant Care

Arugula is a cool-weather plant, meaning it does best in the spring or the fall when the temperatures are cooler. The high heat of summer is too warm for the delicate foliage. Plant Arugula in full sunlight in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Let the soil dry out before watering, water the soil around the plant, and leave the foliage dry when possible.

Growing Arugula Plant

Harvest Arugula leaves when the plant is about 6 inches tall or after about three weeks. Grow this plant in full sun and space plants about 12 inches apart. Start to grow Arugula when the temperature is still chilly, but after there is no longer a threat of frost.

Arugula has an upright growth habit and a shallow root system, making it an excellent container plant. Select a container about 10 inches wide with a drainage hole. Arugula is an annual, so repotting is unnecessary.

Watering Arugula Plant

Wait until the soil dries out before watering Arugula. Saturate the soil when watering to give the roots a deep drink.

Feeding Arugula Plant

Arugula is a fast-growing plant that will continue to grow throughout the summer. Fertilizing the plant helps it continue to push out new growth as you harvest established leaves. Feed Arugula every two weeks, using a balanced fertilizer.
