The dainty blooms and compact size of the Astra White Balloon Flower make this a darling plant to feature in a landscape or container. The Platycodon grandiflorus has balloon-like buds that open during the summer to reveal 3-inch wide, star-shaped, white flowers. Dark green foliage comes to a point and fills in the area below the flowers, anchoring the Balloon Flower plant.
The Astra White Balloon Flower is an excellent option for the front of a mixed bed or in a planter or window box. Pair the Astra White with other plants with white flowers for a monochromatic look, or mix and match the Astra White with colorful companions. The blooms support pollinators like bees and butterflies, but the Balloon Flower is deer resistant. Grow the Astra White Balloon Flower in zones 4 through 9.
Astra White Balloon Flower Care
The Astra White Balloon Flower needs full sun for best blooming, so select a sunny area that receives at least 6 hours of light. The ideal potting mix will be rich, loamy, acidic to slightly alkaline, and moist but free draining. Consistently water the balloon flower, especially during a dry, hot spell. Feed the Astra White Balloon Flower every two weeks using a balanced, water-soluble plant food.
Deadhead the plant to encourage another flush of flowers. Removing spent flowers allows the plant to redirect energy into new bud growth. Trim all growth to ground level after the last of the flowers fade.
