What an intriguing little ground cover! Medium green, succulent, serrated, slightly cupped leaves with a creamy white border whorl around, creating the perfect backdrop for the bright yellow flowers that arrive in summer. While it does flower for you, it is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage that remains evergreen in most climates in its growing zones. Then, if that is not spectacular enough, once the cold weather arrives, a beautiful delicate pink blush paints the centers of each whorl, bringing a whole other dimension of beauty to this unique perennial.
Discovered growing on the island of Ulleungdo off the coast of Korea by horticulturist David MacKenzie, this beautiful sport of stonecrop S. takesimense has delighted gardeners ever since and it is now available for you this spring. Hardy in Zones 4-9, Atlantis will appreciate being planted in full sun in the cool summer regions, and given some afternoon shade in the hot summer regions for best results. Mass this lovely ground cover out for an intriguing display and have your neighbors and friends asking “what is that pretty plant?”.
Atlantis Stonecrop Sedum Care
Care and maintenance of this low growing ground cover is easy once you give it the few conditions it needs to survive. Well draining soil is the number one requirement, whether sandy or a good quality loam. It is tolerant to soil with an average to poor fertility, in fact, it does not like to be fertilized at all. It thrives in a pH range of 5.8 to 6.2, but it will tolerate a wide variance from that and still give you good results. Despite its tolerance for drought conditions, keep it well watered for best performance. A full sun location is best unless you have really hot humid summers, then some light afternoon shade will give the needed relief. Rabbits will rarely bother stonecrop, but bees and butterflies will be frequent visitors.
Deadheading is not necessary with Atlantis Stonecrop as it will continue to push out new blooms in mid to late summer, lasting into fall in some regions. Pruning is also not needed unless you do not like it to spread throughout your garden bed. Then you can divide it up and move it as you need to. Given the chance, this low growing mounding ground cover will completely cover the space you allot to it, choking out weeds in the process, although it is not a fast spreader and unlikely to become a problem for you.
Atlantis Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
Space your plants about 10 to 12 inches apart. Growing just 6 inches tall and spreading out to 12 inches wide, you will appreciate its compact form. Use it as a shade for tall sun loving perennials that appreciate having their roots kept cool. Whether you use this beautiful foliage plant as a filler in your patio containers, or place it in your garden bed, you will enjoy the refreshingly different colors and textures that Atlantis Stonecrop will give you.
