Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea carries ruffled, semi-double pink flowers from spring through fall, giving this evergreen shrub a long flowering season. Rhododendron hybrid ‘Roblec’ matures around 4½ feet tall and 4 feet wide, with glossy dark green foliage that develops purple to bronze tones as temperatures cool. The flowers measure about 2½ inches across and appear in repeated flushes rather than one brief spring display. The winter foliage color adds interest after the final flowers have finished and is easily noticed in foundation beds.

Its dense, upright-mounding habit works well as a medium-height hedge, repeated foundation planting, or flowering anchor in a mixed shrub border. Autumn Carnation is one of the colder-hardy Encore azaleas, rated for USDA zones 6a through 10b. Butterflies and hummingbirds visit the flowers, adding another reason to place it near patios, paths, and other frequently used garden spaces. The compact form also works well in large containers, where both the reblooming flowers and cool-season foliage can be appreciated at close range.

Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea Care

Give Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea full sun to partial shade, with roughly 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight supporting the strongest repeat flowering. It grows best in organic-rich, moist, well-drained soil and should never remain in saturated ground. Maintain acidic to slightly acidic conditions, ideally around pH 5.0 to 6.5, since higher pH can lead to chlorotic foliage.

Keep the root zone consistently moist during the first growing season, watering when the upper inch or two of soil begins to dry. Once established, the shrub tolerates somewhat longer intervals between watering, although prolonged summer drought can reduce flowering and foliage quality. Apply an azalea or rhododendron fertilizer in late winter or early spring, with a lighter feeding after the spring bloom when additional nutrients are needed. Spread 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch over the root area to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures.

Prune immediately after the main spring flowering period when size correction or shaping is necessary. Remove individual long shoots back to a side branch instead of repeatedly shearing the entire plant, which preserves its naturally dense form. Avoid late-season pruning because flower buds for subsequent bloom cycles may already be developing.

Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea Spacing

Space Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea 3 to 3½ feet apart on center for a full hedge, or about 5 to 6 feet apart when individual shrubs should remain visually separate. For container growing, use a pot at least 20 inches wide with ample drainage and an acidic potting mix. Check moisture frequently during summer because container roots dry faster than those in garden soil.

Autumn Carnation Encore Azalea Companion Plants

False cypress and coral bells make compatible landscape companions, tolerating similar well-drained conditions. The evergreen structure of false cypress and lower foliage of coral bells extend interest around the azalea. Begonias can share a large seasonal container that receives morning sun or bright partial shade and consistent moisture.
