Autumn Embers Encore Azalea makes a strong color statement with deep orange-red, semi-double flowers that return across spring, summer, and fall. The 2.5-inch blooms sit against dark green evergreen foliage, giving this dwarf shrub plenty of presence in foundation beds, borders, and containers. Rhododendron 'Conleb' matures around 3 feet tall and 3.5 to 4 feet wide with a dense, mounded form. Use it near walkways or porch steps because the flower color draws the eye even in a smaller planting.
This reblooming Encore selection is one of the colder-tolerant varieties in the series, with listed hardiness down to Zone 6b. Autumn Embers Encore Azalea flowers most heavily when it receives enough direct sun, then repeats later in the season when moisture and nutrition are steady. The evergreen foliage stays dark green through winter, with some purple tinting possible during cool weather. Use it for low hedges, grouped foundation plantings, massed color, mixed shrub beds, or patio containers where butterflies and hummingbirds can visit the flowers.
Autumn Embers Encore Azalea Care
Plant Autumn Embers Encore Azalea in light shade to full sun, with 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight for strong flowering. Morning sun with some afternoon protection works well in hot regions. Use rich, well-drained acidic soil with a pH of 5.0 to 6.5.
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist through the first growing season. Established plants become more drought tolerant, though regular deep watering during summer dry spells supports reblooming and leaf quality. Fertilize after the spring bloom with a slow-release azalea or acid-loving plant fertilizer, and complete any second feeding before August. Add pine bark or pine straw mulch over the shallow root zone to conserve moisture and help moderate soil temperature.
Prune Autumn Embers Encore Azalea immediately after the spring bloom cycle when shaping is needed. Shorten tall shoots back into the body of the shrub and remove damaged branches when noticed. Container-grown plants may need a sheltered winter position in colder areas, especially when temperatures approach the low end of its hardiness range.
Autumn Embers Encore Azalea Spacing
Space Autumn Embers Encore Azalea 3 to 3.5 feet apart for a connected hedge or mass planting, and 5 to 7 feet apart for more open spacing between shrubs. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic potting mix blended for azaleas or rhododendron. Check potted plants often in warm weather and water deeply once the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
Plant Autumn Embers Encore Azalea with camellia, distylium, gardenia, or holly bushes in acidic, well-drained beds with bright filtered light or morning sun. Daylilies and salvia can add warm-season flowers nearby in sunnier mixed borders with consistent moisture. In containers, use lobelia, bacopa, or pansies around the rim for seasonal color that enjoys the same regular watering routine.
