Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea covers dense evergreen foliage with medium pink, semi-double blooms across multiple seasons. Rhododendron 'Conles' grows about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, forming an upright shrub with glossy dark green leaves. Flowers first open in spring, then repeat in summer and fall in favorable growing conditions. We recommend it near foundations and entries for dependable pink color on a shrub that keeps its structure all year.
This Encore® selection has a compact, well-branched habit that works as either a specimen or a repeated foundation planting. The 2.25-inch flowers have softly layered petals that stand out cleanly against the dark foliage. Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea is evergreen, reblooming, and suitable for containers, hedges, borders, mass plantings, and mixed garden beds. Plant it in a protected spot where it receives enough sun to support rebloom.
Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea Care
Plant Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea in full sun to partial shade, with 4 to 6 hours of direct sun resulting in the best bloom performance. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. Acidic soil with a pH around 5.0 to 6.0 is preferred, as alkaline soil may cause leaf yellowing.
Water the root zone consistently through the first growing season so the top layer of soil does not dry out completely. Established plants have some drought tolerance, but deep watering during hot dry weather helps support summer and fall rebloom. Fertilize after the spring bloom or in early summer with a slow-release fertilizer for azaleas and rhododendron, then stop feeding after August. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep over the root zone, pulling mulch away from the stems.
Prune Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea immediately after the spring flower display if shaping is needed. Light tip-pruning can refine the upright form, but heavy cutting may reduce later bloom cycles. Remove spent flowers or stray shoots as needed, and plant in a sheltered spot in colder areas of Zone 6b to reduce winter stress.
Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea Spacing
Space Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea 4 feet apart for a hedge or foundation row. Allow 5 to 6 feet between plants in mixed shrub borders so each plant can keep its upright shape. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes, and plant in an acidic potting mix blended for azaleas or camellias.
In acidic foundation beds, grow Autumn Empress™ Encore Azalea with leucothoe and mountain laurel, which share similar soil needs and expand the evergreen shrub layer. Ferns can cover the lower layer in part shade, giving the pink flowers a quieter green setting. In containers, use primrose or coleus near the rim for seasonal color in bright shade with steady moisture.
