Autumn Fire Encore Azalea loads spring beds with true red, semi-double flowers, returning with more color in summer and fall. The 2.5-inch blooms have a rich, velvety look against glossy evergreen foliage that turns purple-bronze in winter. A true dwarf at about 2.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Rhododendron 'Roblez' PP28279 fits neatly along foundations, walkways, and patio edges. Try this variety when a planting needs a strong red color in a smaller footprint.
Released as part of the Encore Azalea series, Autumn Fire Encore Azalea was bred for repeat flowering, evergreen foliage, and improved cold tolerance. It is one of the hardier Encore selections, listed for Zones 6a-10b, with the strongest rebloom in gardens that receive enough direct sun. Butterflies often visit the flowers. Its mounded habit stays low and dense, making it useful for mass plantings, short hedges, container displays, and the front of mixed shrub borders.
Autumn Fire Encore Azalea Care
Plant Autumn Fire Encore Azalea in light shade to full sun, giving it 4 to 6 hours of direct sun for fuller flowering. In hot climates, morning sun with filtered afternoon light is a smart placement. Grow it in moist, well-drained acidic soil with a pH of 5.0 to 6.5.
Water deeply at planting, then keep the root zone evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during dry spells, especially while buds are forming or summer temperatures stay high. Feed after the spring bloom with a slow-release fertilizer made for azaleas, camellias, or other acid-loving plants, and finish any summer feeding before August. A pine bark or pine straw mulch layer helps protect the shallow roots and keeps soil moisture more consistent.
Prune Autumn Fire Encore Azalea right after its spring bloom cycle only when shaping is needed. Remove stray shoots, cold-damaged tips, or broken branches with clean hand pruners. In colder parts of its range, place container plants near a protected wall or move them to an unheated sheltered area during sharp cold snaps.
Autumn Fire Encore Azalea Spacing
Space Autumn Fire Encore Azalea 3 feet apart for a low hedge or mass planting, and allow about 5 feet between plants for separated mounds. Use a container at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic potting mix formulated for azaleas or rhododendrons. Potted plants need close moisture checks in summer because azalea roots sit near the surface.
Autumn Fire Encore Azalea combines well with cleyera shrubs, yew shrubs, or distylium where evergreen foliage can frame its red flowers and share acidic, well-drained soil. Liriope and Japanese forest grass work well near the front of the bed, adding leaf texture in bright filtered light. In containers, calibrachoa, verbena, and sweet potato vines can trail from the rim while the azalea carries the upright flowering form.
