Autumn Jewel Encore Azalea extends color across the calendar with pink flowers in spring, summer, and fall, followed by purple-toned foliage in winter. Rhododendron hybrid ‘Robleu’ produces single, 2-inch blooms on a dense evergreen shrub that matures about 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Glossy dark green leaves frame the flowers during the growing season, then deepen toward purple as cold weather arrives. We recommend positioning it near entries or windows, where the foliage change remains easy to see after flowering has finished.

Among the more cold-hardy Encore® azaleas, Autumn Jewel is rated to USDA zone 6a and maintains a compact, mounded-to-upright habit. A heavy spring flowering is followed by additional bloom cycles in summer and fall when light and growing conditions are favorable. After blooming, the evergreen leaves remain, providing an elegant backdrop to the landscape. Use it for low hedges, repeated groups along a walkway, mixed shrub borders, or mass plantings where both rebloom and winter foliage color can contribute.

Autumn Jewel Encore Azalea Care

Grow Autumn Jewel Encore Azalea in full sun to partial shade, providing about 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight for dependable repeat flowering. Plant in organic-rich, moist, well-drained soil, amending heavy clay or very sandy ground as needed to improve root conditions. Maintain an acidic to slightly acidic soil pH of about 5.0 to 6.5.

Water deeply during the first growing season, checking the upper few inches of soil and irrigating when they begin to dry. Established shrubs require less frequent watering but benefit from supplemental moisture during prolonged summer heat or drought. Feed after the spring bloom or in early summer with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for azaleas and rhododendrons, and discontinue feeding after August. Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone to moderate soil temperature and moisture.

Prune only when shaping is needed, completing the work immediately after the main spring bloom. Remove stray stems back to a leafy branch junction rather than shearing repeatedly across the entire shrub. In zone 6 and other exposed sites, maintain winter mulch and protect container-grown roots from repeated freezing and thawing.

Autumn Jewel Encore Azalea Spacing

Space plants about 3 feet apart on center for a connected hedge or mass planting, and 5 to 6 feet apart when each shrub will develop as a separate specimen. Use a container at least 20 to 24 inches wide for a young plant, filled with an acidic, freely draining potting mix, and provide winter protection at the lower end of its growing range.

Autumn Jewel Encore Azalea Companion Plants

Camellia and primrose make compatible landscape companions, with camellia adding taller evergreen structure and primrose filling the lower, partially shaded edge. Both share a preference for organic, acidic soil, like Autumn Jewel. In a large container, fuchsia can add seasonal flowers beneath the azalea if afternoon shade, and consistent moisture are available.
