Autumn Joy Sedum is one of the hardest working perennials in the summer and fall garden. The fleshy stems and leaves appear in the late spring and begin to form flower buds which have a pink cast to them all summer. The buds open in the late summer to a vibrant crimson color and remain until the first hard frosts strike. The flower heads attract butterflies when in bloom and the birds are attracted to the seed during the late fall and winter.
Autumn Joy Stonecrop is a herbaceous perennial that will die completely back to the ground in winter. It needs very little maintenance. Leaving the seed heads on the plant over the winter provides food for birds and helps to mark where the new growth will be in the spring. A quick clean up of dried and dead stems in the spring as the new growth appears is all that is needed to keep this Sedum neat and tidy. Autumn Joy Stonecrop is best placed at the front of planting beds so that the structure of the plant can be enjoyed through the Summer. It pairs well with other perennials such as Coreopsis and perennial Geranium.
Autumn Joy Stonecrop Care
Autumn Joy Stonecrop tolerates a wide variety of solid conditions and is not fussy about the pH levels. Growing in alkaline to acidic areas. Sun requirements are equally flexible. Full sun to part shade will help this plant to flourish. Extra watering during very hot spells will be needed. Container planted Sedum will need extra watering and good drainage.
Dividing may be needed every 2-3 years. Dividing can be done either in the Fall after blooming or in the spring just as new shoots emerge. Divided plants will need extra watering the first year after transplanting.
Autumn Joy Stonecrop Plant Spacing
Sedum Spectabile will grow to 24 inches tall and 24 inches wide. They appreciate a larger spacing than other perennials. A 3 foot spacing on center will give these plants the room they need to stay healthy and happy. Autumn Joy looks amazing planted in large groups.
