Autumn Princess Encore Azalea produces salmon-pink, semi-double flowers and maintains a rounded dwarf form. The 2-inch blooms appear in spring, then return in later flushes through summer and fall when the plant is growing in the right conditions. Rhododendron 'Roblea' PP12142 matures about 3.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, with glossy green foliage. The leaves deepen to burgundy in winter, keeping the shrub interesting after the last fall flowers have finished.
This reblooming evergreen azalea is one of the colder-hardy Encore selections, with listed hardiness to Zone 6b. Its dwarf habit is compact, bushy, and slightly upright, making it a good fit for hedges, specimens, mass plantings, and large containers. The salmon flower color is warmer than many pink azaleas, so it pairs well with cream, burgundy, deep green, and blue-green foliage in layered beds. Butterflies and hummingbirds visit the flowers during the bloom season, adding fun activity around patios and front walkways.
Autumn Princess Encore Azalea Care
Give Autumn Princess Encore Azalea 4 to 6 hours of direct sun, choosing morning sun with light afternoon shade in hot regions. Plant it in rich, well-drained soil that stays moist between waterings and never remains saturated. Keep soil acidic to slightly acidic, with a preferred pH of 5.0 to 6.5.
For the first growing season, water at the base long enough to moisten the root ball and the surrounding bed soil. Once established, this azalea needs less frequent watering, though buds and new growth benefit from steady moisture during hot dry spells. Fertilize after the spring bloom with a slow-release azalea fertilizer, and complete any summer feeding before August so late growth can mature before winter. A pine bark mulch layer helps conserve moisture and adds a clean finish around the shallow root system.
Prune Autumn Princess Encore Azalea after the spring bloom flush, shaping only the shoots that extend beyond the natural outline. Remove winter-burned tips in spring once new growth begins, using clean hand pruners. For container plants in colder areas, place the pot near a protected wall during hard freezes or move it into an unheated sheltered space.
Autumn Princess Encore Azalea Spacing
Plant Autumn Princess Encore Azalea 2.5 feet apart for a solid hedge, or 3 to 4 feet apart for grouped shrubs with a bit of space between plants. For a container, choose a pot at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic potting mix made for azaleas and rhododendrons. Refresh the mulch or top layer of potting mix each spring, and water pots deeply until moisture drains from the bottom.
Autumn Princess Encore Azalea combines well with camellia, gardenia, fothergilla, and rhododendrons in acidic beds with good drainage and morning sun. Coral bells and Japanese forest grass can sit along the front edge of the planting, giving foliage contrast near the azalea’s burgundy winter leaves. In containers, use alyssum, nemesia, or begonias for seasonal color around the rim and provide regular moisture and protection from hot sun.
