Symphyotrichum cordifolium, Common Blue Wood Aster, and Heartleaf Aster, is an ideal option. Amiable to pollinators, this popular choice of cut flower with half-inch blooms that are marked with a golden central disc, reaches a maximum height and width of 2-3 feet.
Growing upright and branching with stems that sometimes curve, this perennial offers height, texture, and movement in addition to color. Offering enjoyment in the garden or when cut and assembled as a bouquet, this plant has many diverse uses. Tolerant of powdery mildew, drought resistant, and low maintenance, this plant is a perfect choice for any newbie gardener who does not have a lot of spare time. And? This deciduous perennial is resistant to deer and rabbits so you don’t have to fear little critters munching your pride and joy.
Avondale Blue Wood Aster Care
While Avondale Blue Wood Aster tolerates almost any type of soil ranging from sandy to clay, this herbaceous perennial prefers average soil that is moist but well-draining. Not particularly fickle about sunlight either, this lovely perennial will grow in part shade to full sun; however, to encourage blooming, provide this aster with at least three hours of sun per day. This low-maintenance plant needs to be watered only once per week, and if grown in loamy soil, it rarely if ever needs to be fertilized.
To encourage growth and minimize chances of disease, trim dead leaves and stems. To inspire bigger and better blooms, deadhead spent flowers throughout the blooming season. To prepare Avondale Blue Wood Aster for the winter, cut the stems back to a couple of inches above ground after the first major frost.
Avondale Blue Wood Aster Spacing
Whether growing Avondale Blue Wood Aster in a hedge or in a group, space plants about 24 inches apart. If growing it in a container, ensure that the pot is at least a couple of inches larger than the diameter of the root ball.
