Growing Zones
Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry is a compact shrub that produces a high yield of sweet berries. The black fruit can be eaten fresh, used in baking, jellies, jams, or preserves, and freezes well. This upright plant has green foliage and will grow 3 to 4 feet tall, making it a wonderful container plant. The stems do not have prickly thorns, so it is easy to pick fruit, making this a great plant for families with small children.
Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry Care
Plant when the canes are dormant, either in the fall or early spring. The plants will grow 3 to 4 feet wide, but space plants 3 to 5 feet apart to create a continuous hedge while still allowing some space to harvest fruit. Plant this shrub in full sun using rich soil that is well-drained and has a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. This compact plant naturally maintains a good shape but trim old canes after the harvest.
Growing Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry
This compact plant does not need to be trellised and will grow 3 to 4 feet tall. Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry is low maintenance and does not require much care. It will produce fruit by the second or third growing season.
Growing Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry in Containers
The small size and lack of thorns make this cultivar a good candidate for a container. One plant can comfortably live in an 8- to 10-inch pot. Place the container in full sun and water when the top few inches of soil dry out.
Watering Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry
Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry plants need 1 to 2 inches of water per week during the growing season. Generally, water the plants a couple of times a week, but the plants may need more water during a drought.
Feeding Baby Cakes™ Dwarf Thornless Blackberry
Blackberry shrubs respond well to feeding. Support healthy growth and berry production by applying a balanced fertilizer each spring.
