Growing Zones
Baby Kim® Lilac (Syringa x ) is a third of the size of the common lilac, but still has glossy green leaves. In mid to late spring, lovely, fragrant, lavender blooms cover the plant. These flowers do not fade to white but retain their lavender color throughout their lives.
This plant is rarely bothered by deer or disease. It attracts butterflies and other pollinators. It can be used as a border, a cut flower, in a container, as a specimen plant, in mass plantings, and in the landscape. It will form a nice hedge so can be planted along the foundation. Baby Kim® Lilac is very cold hardy. In fact, it needs a period of cold to stimulate it to bloom. You can grow it in zones 3a to 8b. Baby Kim® Lilacs are originally from Europe and temperate Asia.
Baby Kim® Lilac Care
Baby Kim® Lilacs should be planted in full sun. They require well-drained alkaline soil to do well. They do not tolerate soggy feet. They do, however, require an average amount of water. Fertilize Baby Kim® Lilac with a slow-release fertilizer made for alkaline loving plants in the spring, right as new growth comes out.
These Lilacs do not usually need pruning, but they can be pruned right after they bloom. They only bloom on old wood and if you prune at the wrong time, you will reduce the number of blooms the following year.
Baby Kim® Lilac Spacing
Baby Kim® Lilac is a dwarf lilac so it only grows 24-36 inches. It only spreads 30-36 inches wide. This small shrub can be tucked in anywhere it will get enough sun. Allow 30-36 inches between plants so Baby Kim® Lilac gets good air circulation, which helps prevent disease.
