The Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush puts on a showy display and will create a three-season focal point in your outdoor space. Creamy white flowers bloom in May and later give way to vibrant bright red berries. The foliage of the Viburnum trilobum has gently toothed edges and resembles a maple leaf in shape. The lustrous green leaves develop a bronzy-red hue by the fall.
This shrub has a compact, dense, mounded form and will reach 5 to 6 feet tall. The Cranberrybush makes a wonderful hedge or border. This plant can add a burst of color and texture to a mass planting. Birds will flock to this plant to feed on the berries. The Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush Care
Generally very easy to maintain, the Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush needs full sun to partial shade. Fertile, well-drained soil is ideal. Water when the top several inches of the soil are dry. Support new growth by applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
Do not deadhead the plant since that will reduce berry production. Prune the plant to maintain its shape after the flowers are done blooming.
Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush Spacing
At 5 to 6 tall and wide, the Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush is an excellent shrub to create a hedge or mass planting. Space shrubs 4 to 6 feet apart for a continuous look.
