Bailey's Red Twig Dogwood is a woody shrub, and it may be hard to pick which season this plant looks the most stunning. Small, star-shaped flowers grow in 2-inch clusters that emerge in the spring. By summer, the flowers are replaced with tiny white berries. The broad dark green leaves come to a point and provide a lovely contrast against the flowers and fruit. By autumn, the foliage turns a red-purple color. When the leaves drop in the winter, the branches turn bright red.
This shrub is covered with foliage for most of the year, making it a wonderful hedge or screen. The Bailey's Red Twig Dogwood can also be used in a mass planting or simply add color and visual interest to a landscape. This upright, deciduous shrub is native to North America and grows as a perennial in USDA growing zones 3 through 8. This beauty is cold-hardy, low-maintenance, and deer-resistant.
Bailey's Red Twig Dogwood Care
This Dogwood is forgiving of most conditions and can handle living near a body of water or a bog with high water content. When planted in a damp area, this plant may not need to be watered often, so monitor the soil and water as necessary. The soil should be well-drained, as well as rich and slightly acidic. Plant this Dogwood in full sun to partial shade or an area that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight.
Prune during late winter or early spring to remove old growth, maintain the shape, and allow air to circulate. Apply a balanced fertilizer in the early spring or summer to encourage new growth.
Bailey's Red Twig Dogwood Spacing
The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood will grow 20 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide. Plant shrubs 14 to 18 feet apart to create a dense hedge or row.
