The Baldsmith Japanese Maple is an ornate tree that will reach 4 to 5 feet tall and will put on a stunning display all season long as the four-inch palmate foliage constantly develops new colors. As the leaves emerge in the spring, they are a deep red hue, and as the weather warms, their foliage turns green with a narrow strip of red along the edge. The red edging fades away once the summer heat sets in, leaving the foliage completely green. During the fall, the leaves of the Acer palmatum 'Baldsmith' turn shades of yellow, orange, and red.
This plant has an upright growth habit, but it naturally has many low branches, so it can be used to create a privacy screen for a backyard or patio during the growing season. Use the Baldsmith Japanese Maple as a border or a focal point. This plant is deer-resistant, and the low branches and abundance of foliage create an ideal spot for songbirds. This maple grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 8.
Baldsmith Japanese Maple Care
This plant requires full sun to partial shade. Select an area with afternoon shade for regions with very warm summers to protect the delicate foliage from intense sunlight. Baldsmith Japanese Maple likes consistent moisture, so water when the top few inches of soil is dry. This plant will need weekly watering, but it may need more frequent watering during a drought. While this ornamental tree likes damp conditions, it does not want to be soggy, so use well-draining soil. The soil should also be rich and acidic to neutral.
The Baldsmith Japanese Maple is deciduous, so all of the foliage will drop in the fall. Remove dead or damaged growth; otherwise, this maple does not require much maintenance. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to help support new growth.
Baldsmith Japanese Maple Spacing
This sizable plant will grow 4 to 5 feet tall and spread 5 to 6 feet wide. Use this maple as a border and space each plant 5 to 6 feet apart, measuring from the center of the root ball of each plant. Plant the Baldsmith Japanese Maple at least 4 to 5 feet away from buildings and other trees.
