Hands down, the most outstanding feature of the Bali Rose of Sharon is its flowers. Blooms are semi-double, trumpet-shaped, and white with deep red centers. These extremely showy three-inch flowers, attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, appear from June through October. Each flower lasts for just a day and is contrasted by the green, maple-like foliage.
Deer also favor other plants over this one, so it is an option for landscapes regularly plagued by deer. This Rose of Sharon works well as a shrub border or hedge. It is drought tolerant and able to withstand urban conditions. With a medium growth rate and upright habit, it is also well-suited for use in large containers, especially in combination with smaller plants to fill in around it as a center.
Bali™ Hibiscus Care
The ideal site for the Bali Rose of Sharon has full sun and moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It tolerates poorer soil and partial shade, but flowers may be less magnificent. The Bali Rose of Sharon is drought tolerant once established, but during the period of establishment or when grown in a container, plan to water it about once per week. This shrub also withstands heat and humidity very well.
The Bali Rose of Sharon requires little pruning. Simply cut back stems to shape the plant in late winter or early spring. A harder pruning that leaves just a few buds per branch may promote bigger blooms.
Bali™ Hibiscus Spacing
This plant grows five to eight feet tall with a spread of four to seven feet. Space plants four feet apart if you are growing them as a border or hedge or give them more room if you are using them as specimen plants.
