Enjoy a lovely evergreen with a classic look with the Balsam Fir tree or Abies balsamea. The central trunk features dense branches covered in flat dark green needles, measuring about 3/4 inch long. The shiny needles are slightly lighter in color on the bottom and longer near the middle of the branch. The tree is broad at the bottom and gradually narrows to the top.
Balsam Firs are popular Christmas trees with a festive look and fragrance. These cold weather-tolerant evergreens make an excellent focal point or ornamental addition to a yard. Plant a row of trees spaced apart to shade a yard. This tree is native to North America and is virtually maintenance-free once acclimated.
Balsam Fir Tree Care
Plant the Balsam Fir in full sun to part shade. New plants need consistent water, and this tree has average water needs. Balsam Fir prefers moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. Feed young trees after the first year to support growth, but established trees are not heavy feeders. Use a product intended for evergreen trees and apply each spring.
Prune the Balsam Fir tree in the summer, ideally between mid-July to mid-August. Do not trim the tree during cold weather.
Balsam Fir Tree Spacing
Balsam Fir trees grow 50 to 70 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Space trees at least 10 feet apart when creating a dense line of evergreens.
