Bar Harbor Blend Organic & Natural Potting Soil is a steady, all-purpose mix to enhance the moisture retention of containers without the heavy, soggy feel that slows roots down. This Coast of Maine blend combines sphagnum peat moss, composted manure, perlite, and aged bark, then adds a gentle organic fertilizer derived from kelp meal plus lobster and crab shell meal. It’s packaged in a 1 cu ft bag and works well for everything from hanging baskets to raised beds and houseplants. We like to use it when we're potting up mixed planters or herbs, because it’s forgiving and drains cleanly after a deep watering.

The texture is designed to maintain airflow around roots while still retaining moisture, so you water less often. It’s a good base for annual flowers, vegetables, and indoor plants that like evenly moist soil, and it’s also compatible with soil blockers for starting seeds. If you’re growing starts for several weeks, plan to feed after the initial charge is used up, especially for fast growers.

Product Tips

  • Use containers with drainage holes so excess water can move through the mix.
  • Fill pots loosely, then tap the container to settle; avoid packing hard, which reduces air space.
  • Water thoroughly after potting until you see runoff, then let the mix dry slightly before the next watering.
  • For seedlings or starts kept in this mix longer than a few weeks, add a light feeding plan as growth picks up.
  • For hanging baskets, use a lighter hand with watering at first to get used to the extra moisture retention of peat.
