Growing Zones
Add greenery to a slope or challenging space with the Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper or Juniperus horizontalis. This creeping juniper is a vigorous grower that can fill in a space with little care. This evergreen foliage has a low profile and grows as a dense ground cover. The deep green foliage transitions into a stunning, almost purple hue during winter.
The Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper is low maintenance, easily grows on rocky slopes, and can be used to prevent soil erosion. This plant thrives on neglect, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who need a functional evergreen and don’t want a significant time commitment. Grow the Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper in zones 3 through 8.
Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Care
Plant this juniper in a spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight. It adapts to sandy, dry, and low-quality soils, as long as they drain well. The Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper cannot tolerate overly wet soil. New plants need consistent moisture, but established plants develop drought tolerance and only need water during a long dry spell. Fertilize established plants annually each fall to support new growth.
Creeping juniper does not require much pruning. Remove dead or damaged growth and trim the reaching branches as necessary to help them fit your space.
Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Spacing
Mature Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper plants reach 9 to 12 inches tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. This plant is a fast grower, so space shrubs 5 feet apart and allow them to fill in the empty gaps.
