Hemerocallis 'Barbara Mitchell', commonly called Barbara Mitchell Daylily, looks elegant and is one of the easiest perennials to grow. Shimmering peach-colored flowers with chartreuse throats bloom all summer. The large 6-inch flowers are fragrant and elegantly ruffled. It has grass-like strappy green leaves that make an excellent groundcover. Not surprisingly, it was a winner of the most prestigious award from the American Hemerocallis Society.

This perennial has arching grassy foliage that will reach 18 – 24 inches tall and 20 – 24 inches wide. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. This daylily is tolerant of practically all conditions, including urban pollution, slopes, extreme temperatures, drought, poor soil, salt, and black walnut trees. They grow quickly and are resistant to pests. Its refreshing peach blooms look fabulous in mass plantings or edging a sunny perennial border. Try Barbara Mitchell in containers for an elegant display on your front porch or patio.

Barbara Mitchell Daylily Care

This perennial grows well in full sun to part shade. It is highly adaptable to different soil types, including clay and sand, and adaptable to both dry and moist locations. It is not picky about soil pH or fertility. For best flowering, water Barbara Mitchell regularly during the growing season. Mulch new plants with high quality compost around the root zone to conserve moisture and improve the soil quality.

You can divide daylilies any time of year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Remove any dead foliage in early spring before new growth emerges.

Barbara Mitchell Daylily Spacing

When grown in groups, space individual plants approximately 18 inches apart and stagger the planting rows.If growing in a container, select a pot with good drainage and a diameter of at least 16 inches. Size up the container every year and replace the potting soil.
