The striking beauty of Peonies is unmatched, and the Bartzella Peony or Peony Intersectional is a classic beauty. This vigorously blooming Peony can produce dozens of fragrant flowers starting in late spring. The large semi double-double blooms max out around 6 to 8 inches in diameter. The petals are a deep buttery yellow and feature a splash of rosy-purple in the middle. This cultivar is an Itoh Peony, which is a cross of the herbaceous garden peony with the woody tree types, so the strong stems can easily support the large flowers without staking.
The Bartzella Peony effortlessly dresses up borders and mass plantings while making a fabulous specimen. The stunning blooms make lovely cut flowers that dry very nicely, so the blooms can be enjoyed much longer. After the flowers fade away, the green foliage stays in place until the fall. This cultivar is deer and rabbit resistant and grows as a perennial in USDA growing zones 4 through 9.
Bartzella Peony Care
Plant in rich, fertile, well-draining soil. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral. These drought-tolerant plants have medium water needs. Peonies need full sun but can tolerate afternoon shade.
Remove spent flowers to promote more blooming. All of the growth can be cut back in the fall after the foliage has died back. Feed Peonies in the spring and summer using a fertilizer low in nitrogen, with a ratio like 4-10-12.
Bartzella Peony Spacing
The Bartzella Peony will grow 2 to 3 feet tall and spread out about 3 feet. Space plants 3 feet apart from the center. Peonies do best when planted away from trees and shrubs that will compete for water. This plant does not like to be moved, so select a spot that will be a good long-term fit.
