One of the earliest blooming Spring Phlox, Bedazzled Lavender is sure to bedazzle you with its dozens and dozens of star shaped lavender flowers that literally blanket the foliage. A low, wide spreading perennial with a spring bloom, you will enjoy the first peeks of color of spring largely in part to this beautiful perennial. An improved hybrid introduction from Walters Garden in Michigan, gardeners everywhere will enjoy this lovely little spring bloomer.

Native to North America, Spring Phlox lends its hardiness to this cultivar, growing in Zones 4-8 with ease. Light lavender flowers with a lighter lavender ring and a dark purple star shaped center float above dark green foliage, if you can ever see the foliage. Low growing cushions of pure color will dominate your garden. Companion plant with Candytuft for a nice white counterpart to Bedazzled Lavender as they both bloom about the same time. Coastal gardeners will enjoy the salt tolerance of this perennial.

Bedazzled Lavender Phlox Care

Plant Bedazzled in full sun in gritty, slightly alkaline soil for best performance. Water regularly until established, then only during extended dry periods as this is a low water usage plant. Preferring a soil pH in the range of 5.8 to 6.5 for optimal nutrient take up, Spring Phlox generally does not need fertilizer. Gardeners would be better suited to amending soil at time of planting with some well composted organic material. Plants will go dormant in summer and fall and will return with vigor from the roots in early spring.

Deadheading is not needed, but a late spring shearing may bring a second flush of blooms depending on the heat level of summer months. At any rate, the shearing will promote greater branching, making a more compact bushy habit and setting the stage for even more flowers in the spring, if that is even possible. Winter protection should entail applying a good quality mulch to the root zone for harsh winter protection.

Bedazzled Lavender Phlox Spacing

Space your plants about 32 to 38 inches apart. Plant diseases are usually not a problem as these hardy spring perennials are not prone to powdery mildew, but they grow to only 8 inches tall and spread out a whopping 38 inches wide, so they are going to need some room. Use these lovely spring bloomers as a ground cover with spring flower benefits. They look best in the foreground of garden beds due to their short but wide growth habit.
