Growing Zones
Create a bewitching carpet of bright pink blooms that welcomes spring with an explosion of color. Each notched, pink flower has a small, purple, star shaped eye. This dependable groundcover is 6-8 inches high, and when not in bloom the green, oval leaves form a low mat 3-4 inches above the ground. Bedazzled Pink Hybrid Spring Phlox spreads to 32 inches over time but its spread will never overwhelm other plants or become weedy. It is salt tolerant.
The plant has a mounding growth habit. It is deer resistant; its sweet flowers attract bees and butterflies. This Garden Phlox is a North American native plant. Some of the many ways you can use it in your garden include: as a ‘spiller’ in containers, in borders, as a tidy edging plant, in mass plantings, and as a groundcover. It makes a stunning waterfall of color when draped over a rock wall. It is equally at home in cottage gardens, rain gardens, and rock gardens. You can use it for erosion control on slopes.
Bedazzled Pink Phlox Care
Spread 2-4 inches of compost over an area that drains well and mix it into the top 12 inches of soil. Dig a planting hole the same depth and twice as wide as the pot. Turn the pot on its side and slide out the root ball. Set it in the hole with the crown a little above the surrounding grade. Backfill the hole and mulch with pine needles. Water so the soil is moist not sopping wet. It will need 1inch of water each week if it doesn’t rain. Add a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) to the soil surrounding the plant every spring. Be sure it is in a location of full sun. It thrives in gritty alkaline soil but tolerates average or poor soil with an acidic or neutral pH.
Trim back lightly when the phlox has finished flowering for the best appearance. Remove any dead stems that build up.
Bedazzled Pink Phlox Spacing
Plant multiple phlox plants in an area for a stunning effect. Space them 32-36 inches apart. Good companion plants are Euphorbia, Dianthus, Columbine, and Bachelor’s Button.
