Bella Bellissima is a Potentilla that survives both the coldest and hottest weather. The compact form and giant pink blooms make for quite a nice choice for a sunny, sandy spot. Potentilla makes for a great groundcover on a slope or planted in smaller groups in a sunny garden bed. With low maintenance and a long growing season, Bella Bellissima ™ is a winner.
Potentilla is deer and rabbit resistant. Any soil is fine for these shrubs, as long as it is well drained and has average fertility. The only thing Potentilla does not like is shade and too much water. Both will make it sulk and can cause root rot issues. Potentillas attract beneficial pollinators and butterflies.
Bella Bellissima ™ Bush cinquefoil Patent PP Care
Soil pH is not an issue for these hard workers. Anything from 5.0-8.0 pH will work. Clay or sandy soils or something in between is not a problem. Potentilla will tolerate drought conditions easily after it is well established. Watering needs to be little and often during the first few years.
Growing to 2-3 feet wide x 2-3 feet tall means that very little pruning needs to be done to keep this plant tidy. No deadheading is necessary to keep it blooming all summer long. A generous mulching near the base of the shrub will give it a little extra insulation during the winter months. Fertilization can be kept to a minimum of once a year. A slow release, well balanced fertilizer applied at the beginning of the spring.

Spacing is 2-3 feet, center on center, of the plants. These well behaved shrubs look best when planted in 3’s and 5’s, but do not make very good hedges. They could also be added to containers to give year round interest near a front door or on a patio. When grown in a container, Potentilla will need regular watering and feeding with a weak liquid fertilizer a couple times in the summer.
