Bella Sol® Potentilla, 'Hanchdon' Bush Cinquefoil, or Potentilla Fruticosa Bella Sol™ is a hardy deciduous shrub that produces heaps of large bright orange to golden blossoms, approximately 2 inches wide, that deepen in color as the season progresses. Its vivid green foliage is divided into three to seven leaflets, and compacted into a neat 2 to 3 foot mound with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. The Bella Sol® Potentilla continuously blooms from mid-spring until late-summer.
Native to northern latitudes, the Bella Sol® Potentilla is a low-maintenance variety bred by Bloomin' Easy®. It is deer and critter resistant, and attracts butterflies all season long. It is a very hardy, low-maintenance plant that is cold and drought tolerant.
Bella Sol® Potentilla Care
Bella Sol® Potentilla should be planted in partial to light shade. If grown in full sun, they will fade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil, and should be watered regularly. To reduce the need for watering, you can add a 2 to 3 inch layer of bark mulch around the plant to keep the soil moist. Bella Sol® can tolerate poor soils, drought and heat, especially once it has been established. To plant, dig a hole twice the width of the pot with the top of the root ball at level with the soil.
You should prune your Bella Sol® Potentilla into its classic mounded shape in early spring before any new growth appears. After the bloom period has ended, prune out the oldest stems to make room for fresh growth. It should also be fertilized in early spring.
Bella Sol® Potentilla Spacing
The Bella Sol® Potentilla makes a fantastic, accent border of bed, and is especially striking when planted en masse. It is a trouble-free plant that should be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart from center to center.
