The autumn color of the Berried Treasure™ Box Huckleberry has to be seen to be believed. A vigorous and low-growing shrub, the Gaylussacia brachycera Berried Treasure™ develops small green leaves that turn a deep red as fall arrives. Furthermore, it produces white-pink flowers in the spring that precede its edible blue fruits. This shrub grows to around 18 inches high with a wide spread.
Pollinator and wildlife friendly, this shrub is great for attracting beneficial friends to the garden. A native of North America, Berried Treasure™ is suitable for growing in zones 5 to 8. Use this unique spreading shrub as an adaptable ground cover with year-round interest.
Berried Treasure™ Box Huckleberry Care
The Berried Treasure™ Box Huckleberry prefers moist, free-draining, acidic soil and partial shade. Avoid locations prone to waterlogging or those with poor drainage. Frequent irrigation will be required until it is established and thereafter during hot and dry weather. An organic mulch applied in the spring will give the plant a boost and help reduce moisture loss.
Minimal pruning is generally required. Prune in late winter before new growth appears, primarily to remove dead and damaged branches and wayward growth.
Berried Treasure™ Box Huckleberry Spacing
When mature, the Berried Treasure™ Box Huckleberry can grow to 18 inches tall and up to 8 feet across. When creating a dense ground cover, you can space each shrub around 3 feet apart.
