The Berry Heavy® Gold Winterberry Holly by Proven Winners ColorChoice has the biggest gold berries of any holly shrub available. In order to have the plant produce berries, it has to be planted near Mr. Poppins Winterberry Holly as the pollinator.
These shrubs have 4 seasons of interest and are great for mass plantings, landscape plants, and garden borders. We like these best when planted as a hedge though, that can be cut in the winter for beautiful home decor.
This plant was selected by the late plantsman and conservationist Fred Case of Saginaw, Michigan and is native to North America.
Berry Heavy Gold Winterberry Holly Care
These bushes are adaptable to a wide range of soils from light to heavy. These can also tolerate very wet soil that is saturated.
Do not prune Berry Heavy Gold Winterberry Holly shrubs. It could impact the amount of flowers that grow on the bush. You may cut off dead or sick branches as needed. You may also cut off entire branches for decor. But be sure not to be too aggressive while trimming.
One male plant can pollinate up to 5 female plants. Plant within 50 feet of each other for best results. Other than that, caring for these shrubs is very minimal, as are most Proven Winner plants.
Berry Heavy Gold Winterberry Holly Spacing
Plant these bushes 6 to 8 feet apart center on center in mass plantings. For a hedge, plant these shrubs 5 to 6 feet apart center on center. Be sure to plant a male plant 50 feet in proximity of the female plants for best results and berry production.
