Berry Scape™ Aronia (Aronia arbutifolia ‘UCONNAA001’) stands out with its stunning white blooms that transition into eye-catching red berries. This compact shrub reaches 4 to 5 feet in height and width, making it an excellent choice for various garden settings. From spring through fall, Berry Scape™ offers a continuous display of flowers and fruit, providing year-round interest.
Berry Scape™ Aronia boasts lush green foliage that turns brilliant red in the autumn, enhancing the garden's fall palette. Native to regions from Ontario to Texas, this hardy shrub thrives in full sun and is exceptionally tolerant of heat, drought, and salt. Its deer-resistant nature and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for both residential and commercial gardens. Whether used as a hedge, specimen plant, or border edging, Berry Scape™ Aronia attracts butterflies and other pollinators, adding life and movement to your outdoor space.
Berry Scape™ Aronia Plant Care
To cultivate Berry Scape™ Aronia successfully, plant it in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. This shrub adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay, as long as the soil is well-drained. Water the plant moderately, allowing the top two inches of soil to dry out between watering sessions to prevent root rot. Apply a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season to support vigorous growth and abundant fruit production. Maintaining a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 will help optimize nutrient uptake and overall plant health.
Pruning Berry Scape™ Aronia is straightforward. Remove spent flowers monthly to encourage continuous blooming and prevent overcrowding. If shaping is necessary, prune lightly in early spring before new growth begins, removing any dead or damaged wood. This helps maintain a neat appearance and promotes healthy growth throughout the season. Avoid heavy pruning, as Berry Scape™ blooms on old wood, and excessive trimming can reduce berry production.
Berry Scape™ Aronia Spacing
For optimal growth and air circulation, space Berry Scape™ Aronia shrubs about 4 feet apart when planting in a border or hedge. This spacing allows each plant enough room to expand and thrive without competition. When planting in containers, choose pots that are at least 18 inches in diameter to accommodate the shrub’s mature size. The container should provide sufficient space for root development, but not too much space that the roots are exposed to excess moisture.
