How we score each nursery
Every nursery is graded on the same 47-point scale across 10 categories. The overall grade is the points earned divided by 47. Customer reviews carry the most weight, because they are the best sign of the plants and service people actually received. Open "Score breakdown" on any company to see where its points came from.
- Company reviews. Google and Trustpilot ratings, each compared with the typical rating on that platform (Google ratings run higher than Trustpilot), weighted by the number of reviews. Ratings based on only a few reviews are pulled toward the average until there are enough to trust. Points run from 0 at 2.5 stars or below to the full 10 at 5 stars. Profiles show the actual star ratings.10 pts
- Live plant selection. How many live plants the nursery lists for sale on its site.5 pts
- Warranty. How long plants are covered for free. A stated time period beats a vague promise, and free coverage beats coverage you have to buy.5 pts
- Phone support. Whether you can call and talk to a person.5 pts
- Chat support. Whether live chat is offered.5 pts
- Email support. Whether email support is offered.2 pts
- Weekday hours. How long support is open Monday to Friday. Nurseries that do not publish their hours get 2 points if they list a phone number, email or contact page.5 pts
- Weekend hours. Whether support is open on weekends, when most people garden. Unpublished hours count as no weekend hours.3 pts
- Shipping cost. How much you must spend for free shipping: free on every order earns 5 points, each step up in the minimum ($50, $100, $150, $200) earns less, and no free-shipping offer earns 0.5 pts
- Loyalty program. Whether repeat customers earn rewards.2 pts
A nursery with no Google or Trustpilot reviews is scored at the average rating of the other nurseries minus 0.2 (currently ). Anything a nursery does not publish on its own website scores 0 for that category (except support hours, as noted above), and limited-time promotions are not counted. Ownership type is shown for information only and does not affect the score.
