The Bicolor Butterfly Bush features two-tone flowers that transition from light pink to purple throughout the bloom cycle. Tiny trumpet-shaped flowers have an orange eye and bloom in cone-shaped clusters. The pastel blooms are pink and fade to purple, giving an ombre appearance. What’s more, the flowers of the Buddleia x weyeriana 'Bicolor' bloom in ascending order, so a single flower cluster will have buds and open flowers that are in various stages of changing color at any given time. Enjoy the showy flowers from mid-summer to fall. Ovate green foliage has finely serrated edges and adds interest even when the plant is out of bloom.
The Bicolor Butterfly Bush is a natural choice for a butterfly garden. The stunning flowers attract and support pollinators like butterflies and bees. This beauty is also suitable for mixed beds, borders, and containers. Trim the stems to include the lovely flowers in arrangements. The Bicolor Butterfly Bush grows in zones 5 through 9.
Bicolor Butterfly Bush Care
Select a planting location in full sun to part shade; it will bloom best in full sun. The Bicolor Butterfly Bush needs about 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight. Give the plant a rich, moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply a few times a week to encourage a robust root system. Keep the soil moist, but avoid soggy conditions. Spread a layer of organic compost to retain moisture, eliminate weeds, and support growth.
Prune the Bicolor Butterfly Bush in spring to encourage a full, bushy form. Remove faded flowers or deadhead throughout the summer to extend the bloom cycle.
Bicolor Butterfly Bush Spacing
Bicolor Butterfly Bush plants stand 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Create a dense planting by spacing shrubs 3 to 5 feet apart center on center.
