Growing Zones
Welcome in spring with the Biedermeier Columbine. This upright perennial features tall stalks dotted with long-spurred, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are predominantly blue and tinged with hints of pink and white. The Aquilegia Biedermeier blooms during the spring and summer. The flowers grow on dark, branched stems surrounded by tiny, delicate green foliage.
This plant is a natural fit for borders, beds, and mass plantings. At about a foot tall, try to place this plant near the front of a bed and trim the stems to feature the flowers in arrangements. Pollinators, like hummingbirds and butterflies, will visit the beautiful blooms, but deer usually keep away. This beauty grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Biedermeier Columbine Care
Columbine plants need full to part sun but select a spot with partial sun for better results. These plants prefer a lot of sun in the spring, but some shade is appreciated once the blooms die back. Water weekly, especially during the first growing season. New plants need consistently moist soil, but established plants prefer drier conditions. Soil should be moist, acidic to neutral, and well-drained.
Feed the plant each month during the growing season using balanced plant food. Deadhead the plant to keep it looking tidy and prevent it from self-seeding. Cut the plant back to the basal leaves in the fall.
Biedermeier Columbine Spacing
Biedermeier Columbine is a low-growing plant that will reach 10 to 12 inches tall and equally wide. Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart to create a full, meadow-like effect.
