Eager to find a dainty, pearly-white bloom to complement other colors in your containers or yard? Your search ends with Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed, otherwise known as Coreopsis BIG BANG™ 'Polaris', Polaris Tickseed, and Threadleaf Coreopsis. This herbaceous perennial, an American creation of Darrel Probst, consists of an apricot disk surrounded by pristine-white ray florets. Supported by refined, narrow foliage, this compact plant, with its showy pale blooms wafting in the wind, will add brightness and contrast to any yard or pot from summer until fall.
Any gardener will do well with Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed. Compact and slow growing, this hybrid is exceptionally manageable. Being both disease resistant and drought tolerant, it poses minimal headaches. Even animals are not a primary concern. Being deer resistant, this wash of white won’t suddenly disappear when the critters come searching in your backyard for a midnight snack. Ultimately, Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed’s low maintenance makes it the ideal choice for someone who has just stepped into the gardening ring or for someone who has already been there for years.
Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed Care
Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed will smile broadly, showing its many pearly-white florets, when planted in full sun and loamy, slightly acidic soil that is well draining. A good pH target range to aim for is 5.5 to 6.5. To encourage growth in containers, amend general potting soil with sand, perlite, or coco coir. Conduct a moisture check prior to watering this humidity-tolerant, showy bloomer.
A low-maintenance perennial, Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed does not require frequent trimming. Depending on the number of plants, however, deadheading is recommended after the blooming season has begun. To encourage production of larger and more brilliant blooms, trim spent blooms with a pair of snips or scissors. Wipe any tools with alcohol prior to trimming to prevent spreading disease from one plant to another. If Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed is planted en masse in larger quantities, you can shear the plants a quarter to a third of their height to inspire another wave of white blooms.
Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed Spacing
Big Bang™ Polaris Tickseed reaches a maximum height of only 15 to 18 inches and looks great in borders among other perennials or in containers while playing solo. Make sure, however, to plant these stars at least 18 inches from each other when installing them in hedges or groups.
