For a serious injection of color, look no further than the Big Bang™ Sun Splash Tickseed. With its frilly, two-tone, red and yellow flowers, it simply dazzles whether grown in drifts in a border or a container. Big Bang™ Sun Splash will bloom throughout the summer, attract pollinators, and being perennial, will even come back again next year.
With a compact habit, this plant won’t become unruly; as a herbaceous plant, this tickseed is easy-to-manage and low maintenance. Originating from North America, Big Bang™ Sun Splash is a sun-loving plant that can cope with some shade; it is also deer resistant. With a long flowering season, this coreopsis makes a great choice as a cut flower.
Big Bang™ Sun Splash Tickseed Plant Care
Preferring full sun, this perennial loves a hot and sunny border. Best planted in free-draining, neutral soil, regular watering is required until it is established, after which it can be reduced. Fertilizing isn’t strictly necessary unless the soil is very poor. However, to give Big Bang a boost, an organic slow-release fertilizer can be sparingly applied in early summer. Don’t be tempted to overfeed it though, as over-fertilizing may inhibit flower production.
To keep this tickseed flowering for months on end, regular deadheading during the summer is required. For some winter protection, it is best to leave the foliage standing and to add a layer of mulch, before cutting it back to the base in spring. If grown in containers, move these plants to a sheltered location to overwinter.
Big Bang™ Sun Splash Tickseed Spacing
Growing to 1.5 feet tall and up to 2 feet wide, the Big Bang™ Sun Splash Tickseed does not need a huge amount of room and can provide great impact even if grown individually in a planter. However, if you are planting a mass of it for a big impact, plants can be spaced around 18 inches apart; just make sure you have access to deadhead them when needed.
