Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x 'PODARASNGA 3-30') sends upright pink-purple flower spikes above the foliage like little celebration candles. It blooms from summer into fall, carrying fragrance and nectar that draw butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. The compact plant grows about 4 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, giving sunny beds height in a manageable package. We recommend placing it near patios and paths because the narrow habit keeps the flowers close enough to enjoy.
This Bloomin’ Easy® selection was bred for rich flower color, reblooming, and a more space-friendly form than many older butterfly bushes. Its sterile flowers reduce seed concerns yet feed visiting pollinators through the warm season. Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush is deer resistant, heat tolerant, drought tolerant once established, and hardy in Zones 5 to 9. Plant it as a specimen, sunny hedge, container shrub, pollinator garden feature, or upright color accent in mixed perennial borders.
Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush Care
Plant Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light daily, though 8 hours supports the heaviest flowering. It grows best in average, moist, well-drained soil and should not be planted where water lingers around the roots. Slightly acidic to moderately alkaline soil is tolerated, with a workable pH range around 5.5 to 8.5.
Water deeply after planting; the soil should stay moderately moist while the root system develops. Established plants tolerate dry stretches, but flowering is stronger when drought does not last for weeks. Fertilize lightly in spring only if growth is weak or soil is lean, since too much feeding can create leafy growth at the expense of blooms. Keep mulch pulled back from the crown, especially in clay soil, so the base stays dry and well-aired.
Prune Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush in spring after new growth begins to show. Cut back above strong, healthy buds, removing winter-damaged stems and shaping the plant for a fresh bloom cycle. Deadhead spent flower panicles through summer to encourage faster rebloom and keep the upright display cleaner.
Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush 3 feet apart for a full hedge or grouped pollinator planting. Allow 5 to 6 feet between plants when using it as a specimen with open space around the shrub. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes and a lightweight potting mix, and water more often during hot weather.
In a sunny pollinator bed, plant Birthday Cake® Butterfly Bush with milkweed and bee balm so butterflies and bees have nectar and host-plant value. Larkspur can add early vertical flowers before the butterfly bush reaches peak bloom. Include a dry-site grass like little bluestem to hold interest after frost. In containers, use cuphea or lantana around the base where full sun and regular watering match the shrub’s needs.
