The Bit of Honey False Sunflower is a North American native that effortlessly brightens up an outdoor space. Also known as Heliopsis helianthoides, this herbaceous perennial features impressive semi-double flowers that reach up to 3-½” wide. Warm, golden-yellow petals have feathery tips and surround gold-colored cones. The flowers bloom from mid to late summer. Lance-shaped foliage has dark green midribs and veining that stand out against the white leaves.
The mounded, upright growth habit has a full and dense appearance, making the Bit of Honey False Sunflower a nice addition to a bed or border. Trim the flowers to enjoy in arrangements. This beauty is heat tolerant, so it can easily handle warm summer weather. Pollinators enjoy the large flowers. Grow this plant as a perennial in zones 4 through 9.
Bit of Honey False Sunflower Care
Plant a Bit of Honey False Sunflower in full to partial sun. This plant thrives in 6 hours of sunlight but can handle some shade. Use rich, moist, but well-drained soil. The soil should be acidic to neutral. Let the top few inches of soil dry out before giving this plant a drink. Bit of Honey False Sunflower is drought tolerant, but water during a dry spell to keep the flowers looking their best. Plants grown in rich soil are not heavy feeders, while plants in poor soil will benefit from a slow-release fertilizer each spring.
The Bit of Honey False Sunflower can become straggly, so cut back growth if the stems become leggy. All spent growth can be cut back in the fall or early spring.
