There is so much going for the Black Adder Giant Hyssop that it is hard to know where to start. Also known as Agastache 'Black Adder', this giant hyssop produces tall red-violet flower spikes from June until the fall. Furthermore, aromatic foliage that smells of aniseed accompanies the almost-black buds before they bloom. Black Adder grows to around 2 to 3 feet tall and provides interest for months. 

A serious pollinator magnet, the Black Adder Giant Hyssop is perfect for drawing in wildlife. It is deer resistant and suited to growing in zones 6 to 9. This perennial is perfect for a variety of garden uses, including dry gardens, wildlife areas, cottage schemes and mixed borders. Black Adder is drought and heat tolerant once established. 

Black Adder Giant Hyssop Care

The Black Adder Giant Hyssop requires full sun to thrive. It can cope with most soil types and pH levels as long as the drainage is good. Water for the first season to help it establish. Thereafter, Black Adder can tolerate dry spells and does not need much supplemental water. Fertilization is not generally required. However, to give it a boost, you can mulch it in the spring with a layer of organic matter. 

Cut back spent flower stems to just above ground level in early spring. As winter approaches, you can shorten the stems to prevent potential wind damage. 

Black Adder Giant Hyssop Spacing

Over time, the Black Adder Giant Hyssop can grow to 2 to 3 feet tall by 1 to 2 feet wide. A spacing of 18 to 24 inches is suitable when planting out in a group.
