Feature
For a striking and unusually colored succulent, have a look at the Black Prince Echeveria. This Echeveria affinis produces green leaves that darken to a mysterious sultry red-black with age. If that was not enough, it can also develop wonderfully contrasting red-orange flowers on tall stalks. This stunning hens and chicks plant is easy to look after.
Over time, the Black Prince Echeveria forms an open rosette up to around 6 inches across. It is suitable for growing outdoors as a perennial in zones 10 to 11 or can be brought inside to overwinter instead. Impressive heat and drought tolerance means that this succulent is tough and thrives on neglect. Grow it on its own in a pot or mix it with other succulents–the choice is yours.
Black Prince Echeveria Care
The Black Prince Echeveria needs full sun to thrive and produce the best foliage color. Well-drained soil is essential as it will struggle in a wet or soggy substrate. Water sparingly and only when the top inch or so of soil has dried out. Supplementary fertilizer is rarely necessary; however, a succulent feed can be applied sparingly in spring as required.
The Black Prince Echeveria is wonderfully low maintenance and needs little pruning. If the bottom leaves die back, simply pull them away and remove faded flower stems when necessary.
Black Prince Echeveria Spacing
When fully grown, the Black Prince Echeveria can reach around 6 inches tall and wide. Plant it in a pot slightly wider than its current size or use a spacing of 6 to 8 inches apart.
