Blackberries are one of the best treats of the summer. Picking them isn’t so much of a treat. Black Satin Thornless Blackberry changes that. Imagine being able to pick every last berry with no risk of getting poked! Black Satin is a vigorous grower and heavy cropper. You will have plenty of berries from Black Satin.
Soft pink flowers bloom late in the spring and turn into the large, juicy berries that everyone loves. Black Satin is more tolerant of hot weather and still gives high yields of fruit even in the higher hardiness zones. The blooms appear on year old canes, which makes maintenance pruning easy.
Black Satin Thornless Blackberry Care
Blackberries are long lived in soil that is well drained and has a slightly acidic pH. Watering on a regular schedule is only needed the first two years to get the roots well established. In following years, Black Satin will be a dependably drought tolerant perennial fruit crop. Fertilizing is best done once a year early in the spring. A slow release, well balanced fertilizer is recommended.
Pruning of fruit vines and trees can seem a bit overwhelming. Black Satin Thornless Blackberry makes pruning a breeze. Nothing should be cut back until the second year. When the canes begin to flower, cut out the canes from the previous year that either have no flowers or appear to be dead. Staking of Blackberries is essential to keep the fruit off the ground.
Black Satin Thornless Blackberry Spacing
Typically Blackberries are planted only one or two to a trellis. The overall length of Black Satin’s vines will be 5-7 feet in just one year. That is fast growth that needs as much space as possible. Because this variety is thornless, it could be grown on the same structure as an ornamental vine such as Clematis.
