Growing Zones
This cultivar of a native perennial is the best! It not only attracts loads of native bees and butterflies, but it helps to feed birds in the late fall and winter with its multiple seed heads. The tall, upright growth habit makes it perfect fit for the back of a Cottage Garden or the edge of a transitional zone in a Rain Garden plan.
Blackjack Gold has a long blooming season, which means it will provide cut flowers for arrangements from early summer through to the fall. The sturdier stems of this variety make it lower in maintenance. No need to stake these blooms. Blackjack Gold is a herbaceous perennial, but provides four seasons worth of interest. Leaving the seed heads on the plant through the winter not only feeds the birds, but will provide structure in the garden when little else is left.
Blackjack Gold Black-Eyed Susan Care
Black-Eyed Susan prefers a soil that is not very fertile. Most native plants thrive on little nutrition. Fertilizing this perennial may lead to too much foliage growth at the expense of flowers. A well drained soil and neutral pH are appreciated. When fully established, Black-Eyed Susan can tolerate drought conditions and may not need extra irrigation in the summertime
Maintenance is very low for native plants. Blackjack Gold will only require a quick clean up of old stems from the previous year late in the winter. Dividing should be done on a 3-4 year schedule. The best time to divide Black-Eyed Susan is in the spring or fall. Mulching with organic compost or leaves in the winter will ensure that the newly transplanted perennials will survive.
Blackjack Gold Black-Eyed Susan Spacing
Blackjack Gold has a height of 30-40 inches and a width of 15-18 inches. Planting Black-Eyed Susans in large groups is the best way to display them in the garden. A spacing of 16 inches on center provides the plants with good air circulation.
