The Blazing Sunset Avens is a vigorous grower with lovely and long-lasting flowers. The double flowers of the Geum flora plena have ruffled petals surrounding the stamens, creating a textured appearance. The scarlet red flowers stand out partly due to their bold color but also for their large size. The flowers of the Blazing Sunset Avens are almost twice the size of most cultivars. Enjoy the beautiful blooms from spring into summer.
Plant Blazing Sunset Avens in a border, create an eye-catching mass planting, or add bold color to a mixed planting. The blooms make excellent cut flowers, allowing you to bring the vivid blooms inside to enjoy. The flowers also entice multiple pollinators like bees and butterflies. The Blazing Sunset Avens is deer resistant, so foraging animals tend to leave this stunner alone. Grow this plant as a perennial in zones 5 through 7.
Blazing Sunset Avens Care
Plant the Blazing Sunset Avens in part to full sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade is preferred in climates with hot weather. The soil must be moist but well drained. Newly planted Avens needs consistent water, while established plants need about one inch of water weekly. Fertilize Avens in the spring using a balanced plant food.
Deadheading encourages a longer bloom time, so remove flowers when they fade. Trim all growth to ground level in the fall before the first frost. Divide the plant as needed every few years in the fall.
Blazing Sunset Avens Spacing
The Blazing Sunset Avens grows 22 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Space plants 14 to 20 inches apart to create a continuous planting.
