For a Japanese Maple that provides interest all season long, the Bloodgood Japanese Maple is a stunning option. Botanically called Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood', this tree produces beautiful rich red leaves in spring that last all summer before turning blood red in the fall. Being deciduous, even when this specimen tree drops its leaves, its silver-gray bark reflects the winter light beautifully. Eventually, the tree will reach 20 feet high with pleasing symmetry.

The Bloodgood Japanese Maple is often grown as a statement piece, as the foliage is truly eye-catching during the growing season. Originating from East Asia, this tree develops an upright habit and can provide some valuable shade during the warmer months. Once established the Bloodgood Japanese Maple can put on vigorous growth, but is low-maintenance and needs little care.

Bloodgood Japanese Maple Care

The Bloodgood Japanese Maple displays the best color when planted in partial sun. It prefers to be grown in a slightly sheltered spot, in moist, but free-draining fertile soil that is slightly acidic. Growing to approximately 20 x 20 feet, care must be taken when planting this tree so that it does not interfere with overhead utility lines or structural overhangs. Regular watering is required for at least the first couple of years after planting and in hot and dry spells. An annual mulch around the trunk can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

The Bloodgood Japanese Maple rarely needs any pruning as it naturally produces a pleasing shape. However, if necessary, any dead, diseased or crossing branches can be removed using sharp and sanitized pruners when the tree is dormant between November to February.

Come winter, any snow that falls and settles on the tree should be carefully brushed off to avoid the weight damaging any stems or branches.

Bloodgood Japanese Maple Spacing

Growing to an approximate 20 feet tall by 20 feet wide, the Bloodgood Japanese Maple needs to have enough space to mature and be seen. Being such a stunning tree, it is often planted on its own so it can be appreciated. Being deciduous, light will reach the floor in winter and spring making it perfect for underplanting with spring bulbs.
