Growing Zones
Bloodgood London Planetree, Platanus x acerifolium ‘Bloodgood’, are prized for their ability to provide shade and beauty to the landscape. They are known for their distinctive bark, which peels off in thin, curly strips to reveal a cream-colored mottled inner bark. Star-shaped green leaves fill the tree's rounded, large canopy and turn attractive colors ranging from yellow, gold, and often reddish purple in autumn.
‘Bloodgood’ is an excellent shade tree selection when used in urban areas where poorly draining soils, drought, salt, or air pollution are prevalent. Bloodgood London Planetree grows in Hardiness Zones 5-9, reaching heights of 85 ft tall with a canopy spread of 50 - 70 ft. They are an important habitat for a variety of wildlife.
Bloodgood London Planetree Care
This London Planetree prefers to be planted in a full-sun location and in well-draining soil. They are relatively low-maintenance trees, and as long as you provide the basic sun and soil requirements, they will thrive.
When planting a young Bloodgood London Planetree, use a tree guard to protect the young trunk from deer rubbing their antlers, which could damage the young, delicate bark. There are many DIY ideas or ready-made items available online.
After planting a new Bloodgood London Planetree, apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch around the root zone, pulling it a few inches away from the trunk, to protect the roots from harsh winters and to help retain soil moisture. Pruning is only necessary if dead or damaged branches appear.
Bloodgood London Planetree Spacing
Because Bloodgood London Planetree can grow to be quite large, reaching 85 ft tall with a 70-ft wide canopy, plant it in an open location or a large landscape where it has plenty of sun and space, away from competing trees. Avoid planting near sidewalks, driveways, or foundations to prevent the root system from potentially damaging structures.
