The Bloody Cranesbill is a darling blooming plant with charming flowers. Also known as Geranium sanguineum var. Striatum, this perennial boasts cup-shaped flowers that measure 1 to 2 inches across and bloom from late spring through late summer. The flowers stand out amongst the compact mounded greenery. The foliage is deeply lobed, with narrow finger-like segments. The dark green leaves provide a nice contrast to the light pink blooms. The foliage turns bronzy-red by fall, adding a pop of seasonal color.

The mounded, reaching form of the Bloody Cranesbill is ideal near the front of a mixed bed or border. The dark green foliage stands out against a rock garden or makes a lovely ground cover, especially under shrubs and trees. Feature this hardy geranium in a container or hanging basket and let the stems cascade over the edge. This geranium is both deer and rabbit resistant, so you can enjoy the dainty blooms and lush foliage all season long.

Bloody Cranesbill Care

The Bloody Cranesbill needs full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. Water container plants when the top couple inches of potting soil are dry. Landscape plants need water weekly or during a dry period.

Cut back leggy growth by mid-summer to encourage new growth and additional blooms. Divide full landscape plants in the spring or fall. Cut back growth in the fall and apply a thick layer of organic mulch to insulate the roots over the winter. Move potted plants to a protected area during the winter.

Bloody Cranesbill Spacing

Bloody Cranesbill grows 6 to 9 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart when creating a dense planting, or plant 2 geraniums in a 12-inch pot.
